Odds and ends of Wyoming high school sports.
The right cap for a senior season
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on February 20, 2008 at 8:53PM EST

Terry Rolfe's swimming career has always been uncertain at best -- and never more than last year.

Rolfe, then a junior at Newcastle, was the defending state champion in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. But on the first day of practice, Rolfe was one of only two Dogies to show up.

That didn't stop him. He practiced in Newcastle during the week, then on the weekends, he joined up with the Buffalo Bison and wherever they were headed.

He got the chance to defend his state championships and did just that, winning the 100 free and 100 back again while helping Buffalo -- normally a rival to Newcastle in the pool -- to a fourth-place finish at state.

This year, the Dogies resurrected their own program, and Rolfe has never been swimming better. Entering the Class 3A Wyoming State High School Swimming and Diving Championships, which start Thursday in Gillette, Rolfe has the top qualifying time in six of the eight swimming events (200 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 100 breaststroke). In the other two, Rolfe is close to the top -- he's qualified fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 100 butterfly.

The only drawback is that he can only swim in two individual events at state. But no matter where he swims this weekend, Rolfe is sure to impress.

And it makes it all the more worthwhile that he gets to do so while wearing a Dogies swim cap.

It is great to hear that Terry is having another great year. I am not sure what Terry's future plans are, but I imagine they will include swimming somewhere. The really interesting thing about Terry is that he probably could have been a multiple state champion in diving as well.
.
Great job Terry and Good Luck!

Terry is a quiet, unassuming young man who has tremendous athletic talent. He has signed a letter of intent to compete at the University of South Dakota next season. Terry joins four former Dogie swimmers/divers on the USD squad. Leita Rolfe, Jenny Kohlbrand, Erin Wagoner, and Hannah Roetzel are all currently USD Coyotes and have qualified for the DII National Meet later this month in Columbia, MO.

On a side note, in Terry's only diving competition this season he defeated the defending state champion from Lander at a meet early in February at Douglas. I understand the Lander diver was not performing his most difficult line up; however, it shows what type of athletic ability Terry does possess.

Patrick, thank you for a nice article on a good kid.

Just as a postscript, Terry was named the athlete of the meet and the athlete of the year at the 3A finals today. He set a new Class 3A state meet record in the 100 backstroke and also won the 200 individual medley.

Patrick,
You should keep an eye on those former Dogies that are swimming for USD at nationals right now. They are a major reason why USD swimming has been solid that last few years.
