Somewhat bold wrestling choices
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on February 21, 2008 at 7:24PM EST

Here they are, my (sort of) long-awaited state wrestling picks.

(By the way, you'll note that I'm only picking team champions. Choosing individual champions... I'll leave that to the REAL experts.)

Class 4A:
1. Gillette. Not as strong as past years, but still strong enough to win it all.
2. Star Valley. This championship race will come down to Saturday night, and if the Braves win enough when it counts the most, they could leapfrog the Camels.
3. Natrona County: The Mustangs will have their share of individual champions, but I don't know if the depth is there for the team title.

Class 3A:
1. Powell. Moving right along... foot loose and fancy free. They're ready for the big time, is it ready for Powell?
2. Douglas. Another solid year for a solid program.
3. Wheatland. This program is growing. Watch out.

Class 2A:
1. Cokeville. It's the Panthers' wide breadth of individual talent and big (projected) Saturday night run that earns them this spot.
2. Lusk. The Tigers will likely fare much better at state than they did at regionals. Just a hunch.
3. Moorcroft. Depth will carry the Wolves, but likely only so far.

Predictions. Discuss. Fortunately, the guys on the mat will settle it all this weekend, redering all of this moot a little more than two days from now....

I was shocked when the entire Star Valley section boo'd a wrestler. I would have expected more from parents than to boo a kid. That was completely unacceptable.

Posted by: football fan on February 25, 2008 10:42AM EST
Yeah, well what about when the entire Gillette fan section boo'd every Star Valley kid in the Championship face off - that was worse than unacceptable!

Posted by: wrestlerfans on February 25, 2008 10:49AM EST
Well, Star Valley and Torrington have been booing each other for years. I think the state should do something about it. Now that Gillette and Star Valley are doing it to each other. The kids do not deserve that.

Posted by: football fan on February 25, 2008 11:33AM EST
Wrestlerfans, I agree. These kids are working their tails off all year and don't deserve to be boo'd just because they are from a team that is doing well. Maybe they should start taking team points away for poor sportsmanship from fans - that would shut them up!!!!

Posted by: 167wrestler on February 25, 2008 1:05PM EST
Well here we go.....The only time I recall the entire Star Valley section booing was for the 160# finals match and they were not booing the wrestler, they were booing the refs decision to give the match and 6 team points and basicaly the State Title to Gillette. When you slam a wrestler to the mat and do not land on the mat before your opponent it is a penalty. The Natrona wrestler was knocked unconsious and was unable to continue even the Gillete wrestler knew he had screwed up and thought he had lost the match. All I have to say is I know it is a referee decision as to if it was a penalty or simply a hazardous situation but initially he indicated a penalty and then after discussion with the second referee awarded the match to Gillette. Yes had the call gone the other way Star Valley would be champions and not Gillette. Myself or our team do not wish to win or lose the state title on a referee decision like that. As I am sure the Gillete faithful would feel the same. So what it really boiled down to was the fact that Gillette got it done when they needed to and we fell 1 match short. I congratulate Gillette on a job well done, You have a great program and a great group of kids!! It was fun competing with talent like yours and Natrona's It will only make us better so keep working hard because we will and we will be back.

167 wrestler, good post. difficult call no dout, was it intentional? i can guarentee it was not. brady is not like that. im sure brady did'nt want to win his title like that, & im sure jimmy did'nt want to lose like that. they are both great competators & great kids. CONGRATS to you star valley! you have a great team, coach & fans. you had us on the ropes & we were worried!, as for the booing, don't take it personal, we don't. if you recall, the wrestlers, coaches & fans were all wearing scarlet & gold ribbons in support of the dana family, and your community. congratulations to all the wrestlers! one of the most exciting state tour. in memory. ROCK ON GILLETTE CAMELS !!!!!! 6 N A ROW

Posted by: wrestlingfan167 on February 25, 2008 9:12PM EST
Does any one know how the Gillette fan that was taken out by stretcher during the finals is doing? Congratulations to all the wrestlers and the people who put the tournament together--get job. My only concern was with the number of parents who were held up in the east stairway when trying to get to the medal presentation. We had to run to get to see our son in the 103 presentation.

I have always told my kids and the teams I have couched in little leauge sports that a boo is the way your competion cheers for you.I do agree with 167#wrestler that some of the boos were directed to the officals rather then the wrestlers, and everybody boos the refs or complains to anyone who'll listen. I thought is was a great tourament and enjoyed my weekend in Casper

Posted by: wrestlingfan167 on February 25, 2008 11:45PM EST
Okay I can't type. Meant to say great job to all the wrestlers, volunteers, directors, etc.

Posted by: GilletteFan on February 26, 2008 2:12AM EST
wrestlingfan167 I know the family personally and Eddie Stuber was released from the hospital the following day. I am glad to see that Eddie made it out ok. As for the Gillette paper saying he had a heart attack.. it was not. He had a seizure and the MRI shows no signs of damage.

Congrats to all the wrestlers on a job well done at state. It was the best tournament I have been to in a long time. I do have to say that the Booing in 4A is normal. Gillette Natrona and even Green River would go at it in years past. I do want to add welcome to 4A Star Valley! You gave Gillette what they needed. A run for their money and hopefully you will have another great season next year!

There is an article on Eddie Stuber and the Gillette wrestling team at http://gillettenewsrecord.com/articles/2008/02/26/sports/sports01.txt

Once again it was a wild ride at the wrestling tournament. I do feel for Jimmy Owens. One minute he was wrestling and the next he was out of it. He came to and found out he lost the state champion. I think it was a very bad call on the referees part.

Posted by: football fan on February 26, 2008 6:51PM EST
Hey Ranea,
Go check out the video that the Casper Star has. We looked at it today and it completely changed our minds about the call. Good call - Good kid!!

Posted by: Ranea on February 26, 2008 7:16PM EST
I have watched the video over and over and I still think the referees made a bad call. I am just thankful Jimmy Owens was not hurt seriously.

Posted by: gtown on February 26, 2008 9:13PM EST
Is the video with the controversial call just on the trib website?

Posted by: football fan on February 27, 2008 12:34PM EST
gtown, here is the site: http://www.trib.com/wshwc/videos/4A/160.html
I'm sure everyone is glad that JO was not seriously hurt, and it was a very unfortunate way to have a state title decided, but we still contend the correct call was made.

Posted by: Outlawfan on February 27, 2008 1:30PM EST
Was anyone at the powell invite where Owens did virtually the same thing to a powell kid?

Posted by: southeastfannot on February 27, 2008 1:54PM EST
TO add to the Easton/Pope match at State wrestling. Easton is what you would call an arrogant person. Mr. Pope handles himself as an athlete not as an "I am the best jerk" as Mr. Easton does. Mr. Easton thinks he is good, may be good, but may want to open his eyes before he hits the college level. He is only from a small school, and it will proof when he hits the college level. He might want to concentrate on school as well. Football will not give him a paycheck down the road. The parents and grandparents need to live their lives and not through their arrogrant wrestler and football player.

Posted by: gtown on February 27, 2008 4:09PM EST
Thanks football fan!

Posted by: football fan on February 27, 2008 4:33PM EST
I saw both "slams: and they weren't virtually the same at all. Jimmy did throw the Powell kid on his neck, mostly likely wasn't intentional, but that's where the kid landed. In my opinion that was a good call. I have to admit that situation went through my mind when I saw what happened at state and I thought at the time that the same call should have been made. After reviewing the video, I think that the ref made the right call. They did come back down to the mat pretty hard, but they came together and the neck and/or head didn't hit first. There were probably hundreds of situations just like this one last weekend that fortunately didn't cause one wrestler to be unable to continue. Again - an unfortunate situation, but that's all it was!!

Posted by: Cyclone Fan on February 27, 2008 5:41PM EST
Why would you say that about Stephen Easton? Did he not beat the Pope kid (he was picked to have won the whole thing even before the tourney began) rather easily? Easton went undefeated---that's a huge accomplishment. Maybe you are seeing his confidence as being arrogant.

Posted by: gtown on February 27, 2008 6:51PM EST
Even if Easton is arrogant " I have no clue if he is or not" you probably shouldnt bash him like that. I agree he will probably have a wake up call in college but you shouldnt put him down so bad

Posted by: 1afan on February 28, 2008 2:05AM EST
Mr.Easton is a fine young man along with being a great athlete.I have had the pleasure of knowing him for several years. He is confident but arogant he is not.Since I met him at an out of state wrestling
tournament several years ago I have followed his carrier, and found him to always be polite and friendly.A tough competetor always but thats the name of the game isn't it.In football and wrestling
I have always loved watching the all out effort he always gives. But then I apreciate quality performances even if they come from somebody other than my team

Posted by: southeastfannot on February 28, 2008 8:36AM EST
Sorry if I offended Mr. Easton or his fans. I will give him credit for having a good year as far as wrestlig and for football. He may have confidence but his arroagance out shines his confidence. Sounds to me you are not seeing that side of him or choose not to see that side of him. Too bad Torrington did not have him for football. He would heve been asset to them. But I guess he needed to attend a smaller school 20 miles away to get his recognition.
Take you blinders off and look at what is really there. Wyoming has a lot of good high school athletes and Stephen Easton is not the best, may be good but not the best. Hopefully he will put as much effort into an education in the future. Rumor has it he is going to college next fall to play football. I thought we sent our children to college to get an education. Athletics is only a part of college. Sorry cylcone fans for offending you. But things are as they are. I do wish him the best, but I hope he knows what his coming. Athletes from small schools tend to have a schock to their system
when going to college. They are on the top for so long and when they actually have some competition they flounder. Again sorry I offended the Stephen Easton fan club.

Posted by: magnetoman on February 28, 2008 10:40AM EST
Since the discussion has turned to small school athletes... A big congratulations to UW's Shaylee Babbitt, from 1A Southeast High School, for being named the Mountain West Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Posted by: sportsfan on February 28, 2008 11:49AM EST
IT doesnt matter if you come from a small school or big school on how you might do in college. I played college football, came from a Small school and there were plenty of kids from Bigger schools who quit and couldnt handle it. ITs called having some heart. I wish the best to everybody who makes this step. stop bashin people for trying dude. Mr. Easton would be a top player at the 5A level as well. I have first hand knowledge that a few 5A coaches would have loved to have this kid. Stop bashing when you have not a clue. congrats to Shaylee, yes she was from a small school. huh...

Posted by: Quit the BS on February 28, 2008 11:54AM EST
Southeastfannot get your story right, Stephen Easton went to southeast because of torringtons poor academics, I've known this young man for many years and he has came out and proved over and over again that he is a very good young man. You can bash him all you want... When you said that he is attending collage to play football he is, idk what you are trying to say but you'd say the same if it was paying for your schooling. I believe MR. EASTON will be very succesful in collage and im very proud of him. But i really see a very arroagent side from you coming out, You dont know this young man like so many of us do. Congratulations Stephen on a great high school carrer.

Posted by: gtown on February 28, 2008 11:42PM EST
Where is Easton even going to college? just curious

Posted by: mo on February 29, 2008 1:08PM EST
First of all, Torringtons academics are NOT that bad, nor Southeasts that good. However, all of Goshen co. should be proud of Stephen's accomplishments. It amazes me how many naysayers there are when a young man wins and how many excuse makers there are when another loses.

Let's face the facts and acknowledege just the good and leave the bad out. Or we could talk about how hard Stephen trained to beat Pope and avenge his finals loss from the previous year.

Posted by: ctown on February 29, 2008 1:58PM EST
1st of all: Congratulations to Shaylee Babbitt. She is what you would call an outstanding student athlete. Way to go Shaylee!!!

Next: Stephen Easton. He had a great year as far as football and wrestling. I am ready for the next step as is Stephen. I also have an athletic scholarship like Stephen and I also have an academic scholarship. I know that I must be a good student as well as a good athlete. My coach has always told me good students make athletes because of their work ethic. My grades have earned me a full ride for 4 years. Hopefully Stephen can do both. It now will become a job to play football. It will not be as much fun as it was in high school. But if that is what a person wants you work extra hard.

I have a problem with the comment regarding Torrington have bad academics for Stephen going to Southeast. Too bad there is problem with the schools in that district thinking one school is better than another. You be ashamed of making that comment. I know other indivudals who attended Torrington High School and they are good students and I know some of the athletes. So don't put down Torrington High School. I hope your administration does not read that comment.

Also as far as the arrogant comment. I was at FB camp witwh Stephen. A good player ?? Time will tell at the next level. But I do know that he is arrogant. I am sorry that I must agree and make all the Southeast supporters unhappy.

It looks like to me that people don't like hearing the truth. Blinders need to taken off. Don't get so defensive when you don't know the other side of how a person may or may not act.
