Odds and ends of Wyoming high school sports.
Something old
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on March 1, 2008 at 10:36PM EST
I just got the word from Ron Laird, commissioner of the WHSAA....

The 3A-4A state basketball tournament will use the old schedule of class rather than gender. This year's 1A-2A tournament split the schedule up by gender (boys playing at one site one day and the other the next, same for the girls) and the 3A-4A tournament was supposed to be set up the same way. But with the seeding mix of the 4A teams that qualified today, there was no way to set up the schedule to give fans adequate time to travel from the Casper Events Center to Casper College, especially during the semifinal round.

This year's tournament will be set up similar to past 3A-4A tournaments, with the 3A teams at the Events Center on Thursday and Casper College on Friday and the 4A teams at the college Thursday and the big house Friday.

I think Ron Laird realized what a cluster **** the 1A/2A tournament was. Fans spent more time running back and forth this year (and with gas at 2.99 a gallon) to both sites. Too bad the BIG schools can't have the same exciting experience. Ron Laird should move on!

Are the times posted on the WHSAA website for the games correct? I noticed it starts with 2 girls games, then 2 boys games. In previous years it alternated every other game.

Basketball Fan - Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I appreciate the commissioner trying new ideas, and to make the change now if he didn't see it would benefit the 3A/4A finals. How about having all semi-final games at the event center on Friday, and all consolation games at Casper College. This might take care of the congestion at CC, but it too would create some issues.

Here's to a great 3A/4A tournament. I can't wait!!

Glad that BF got clustered. It would be a shame to drive so far and get no satisfaction.
Great job, Patrick, covering the tourney last week.

I think it is a nice problem to have. What it tells me is that the popularity of the state tournaments is growing. That has to be a good thing, does it not? When Natrona played Riverton in a semi-final game at Casper College in the mid '80's, T-Bird gym was packed and people were standing around the court until the fire marshal closed things down. That is when the 4A semi-final games were all moved to the Events Center. Now it sounds like all the classes are running into the limits placed on T-Bird Gym. Again, it's a pretty good problem to have. I heard that the Events Center was packed for the All-Class Wrestling tournament in February. The popularity of high school sports must be growing. Again, a good thing. I remember people complaining this fall about the limited seating at some of the football championship games. Again, a sign that high school sports are growing in popularity. I was at the state indoor track and field championship in Laramie on Friday and Saturday and with 15 teams and over 550 participants it was a spectacle and with all the adults there with video and digital cameras, it's popularity continues to grow. Another positive sign. Let's be glad that high school sports in Wyoming is growing and finding a seat a problem. Sounds like a better alternative than trying to find a seat at Congressional Hearings in Washington on drug cheats in professional sports.
