Odds and ends of Wyoming high school sports.
Not a creature was stirring...

... especially no one in Wyoming's high school sports arenas. It's the down time for most teams right now, the quiet between the preseason and the regular season. Although there are a few events going on this week, most teams have the time between Christmas and New Year's Day to themselves.

A little relaxation, though, isn't a bad idea. The winter season is the longest of them all, a full 17 weeks from beginning to end. Contrast that with the fall season (13 weeks) or, egad, the spring season (a scant 10 weeks).

The winter sports participatns have the most time to develop, the most time to improve from practice No. 1 to contest No. 30. It can be a long, drawn-out process, so a week off can't be all bad.

For those of you that have this week off, enjoy it. And if you don't have the week off, well.... at least you're not bored like everyone else. :)

So happy holidays and enjoy the season, no matter what you're up to.

I have heard that in Colorado there is a mandatory dead week where athletes cannot even enter the gym. What do you all think about that?

I am not sure about a manditory dead week. However, as Patrick mentions, this is the longest season. Some kids are chomping at the bit to do something over a long Christmas break. As a parent, I appreciate a coach that will give the kids some time off, and I also appreciate that fact that the coaches family gets some time with them as well. Open gyms time is a great way to encourage the kids to stay active, but also allows for important family time!

The dead period is interesting, because in Colorado I know their seasons run together (basketball practice starts before football season ends). That doesn't happen in Wyoming; and it's only the 10 teams that make the state football championships that don't get at least one week off between the fall and the winter. Girls teams, meanwhile, get two full weeks between the end of state volleyball and the start of basketball, so there is already a lot of dead time built into Wyoming's calendar. With that, I don't think there's a need for a specific dead time over the holidays, which might be necessary in other states where calendars might tend to run together more.

hey patrick a little off the subject...but do you know when the shrine bowl picks are supposed to be out?

bobcat fan -- By the "commitments page" I think you mean the old "Signing On" page we had listing the college choices of Wyoming's high school athletes.... For now that page isn't up yet. That died when Old Goulash died, unfortunately. As soon as I figure out how to re-make the list and get it back up, I will. In the meantime, I'm keeping a backup list on my hard drive, so when I do figure out how to do it, the list should be up to date.
Sorry.

3Awestfan: Shrine Bowl rosters should be out by the first week in February. That's when they've been out each of the past two years.
