North 16, South 10
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on June 15, 2008 at 1:28AM EST

The 2008 Shrine Bowl is in the books. The North won 16-10. Check the Star-Tribune on Sunday and Monday for more.

Anyway, the game itself was all it was hyped to be. The North's ground game was just a little too much for the South to overcome. Turnovers were also key -- the South had four, the North one.

Tongue River's Rob Johnson won offensive MVP honors, while Kelly Walsh's Zach Johnson was the defensive MVP.

Rob Johnson's numbers were solid for a low-scoring game -- 9-of-17 passing for 118 yards and a touchdown, and four carries for 21 yards and another score.

Zach Johnson, meanwhile, won the defensive honors thanks to two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Rock Springs' Drew Rollin had my vote for offensive MVP, by the way. He finished with an even 100 yards on 15 carries and help set up the South's only touchdown with a big 23-yard run. He had more than half of his rushing yards in the first quarter.

I'm still wrapping my head around this one. I'll probably post some more thoughts as comments below as I think of them.

What did you think? Were you there? Who got your votes for MVPs? What plays stuck out in your mind?

I thought the game turned on that little back from Riverside's screen pass in the first half that he ran up the right sideline for 50+ yards to help set up the north's first score. Also, I wonder why Rollings disappeared from the game plan late in the game. Seems like he could have given the South a chance. Evanston's QB panicked a bit to early when he threw his second interception when he tried to strike it big with a long pass towards the end zone. They had plenty of time (3 minutes) to march it down for a TD and go ahead PAT. Heise (sp) is a powerful back and the kid from Worland (Stephen?) had a great game at corner for the north. I thought Stratton was handled anytime the north pulled to run wide and was not effective. Finally, Johnson is the real deal. He had poise and threw the ball well. His numbers were good even with his drops. Also, it seemed to me the south blitzed at times late - against the Shrine Bowl rules... All in all - a GREAT game to watch. Makes you lose sight a bit that the real reason for the game - and a great one at that - is to benefit the Shriners hospital and the Shriners do GREAT work.

I wasn't able to make the game, but wish I could have. I was very disappointed that I could not get a broadcast on any radio station or on the internet. I actually called a TV station in Casper and they told me the half time score. No updates on Wyopreps. I really enjoyed the articles in the Trib leading up to the game. It is funny, the All-star basketball games had and will have radio and internet coverage, but there wasn't much pregame info in the Trib. The Shrine Bowl had lots of pregame coverage in the Trib and not much for game coverage on the radio and internet. In all fairness, there may have been radio coverage, but it wasn't on any station we could get.

GoOrange, I agree with you on your view of the game. I am glad that people outside of the "2A" group got to watch Rob Johnson, Casey Garnhart and Toby Wood compete. Great athletes! Out of all the great players on the field that night, only one, Jim Downs is going to UW (on scholarship) that I am aware of. I know Wood had an offer to walk on and Johnson was recruited since his sophomore year, but they gave the spot to Crum. It looked like Toby made Downs look silly on the field. Johnson had a great game and deserved the MVP. Maybe the coach got tired of Rollins' little showboating antics but I agree with you, he did disappear late in the game. I think I would have called his number often. It was a tremendous night for football. The Shriners do a great job and the kids benefit tremendously. I am looking forward to the Wyo-MT all-star games this weekend. Rob Johnson is playing in them also to cap off a wild couple of weeks for him. Should be fun.

GoOrange, good call on Garnhart. We noticed that, too, hence the follow-up story we did the day after the game. That screen pass was huge and IMHO it ended up being the play of the game. By the way, Feusner's TD catch on the end of that drive wasn't easy -- I was standing right on that corner of the end zone when it happened, and it was a great pass and a tremendous catch.

I did notice that Toby Wood was part of the North's "Hippo" offensive set as a fullback. Down on the goal line he was a nice lead blocker to have.

Bulldog Fan, I noticed, too, that there was no radio coverage of the Shrine Bowl. I haven't seen any the past two years. That's not a knock, just an observation.... A void that some forward-thinking station could fill.

I'm somewhat disappointed Alex Bush didn't have the break out game that was expected. I have heard he was suffering from a torn hamstring coming into the week of practice and pulled his hipflexer during practce. Then if thats not enough it was also said he pulled his opposite hamstring during the early parts of the game. I think he played well but could of been a game breaker and possibly offensive MVP. All in all it was a good game and I also think the Natrona County linebackers were superb.
