Impossible Trivia Thursday -- final round
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on August 14, 2008 at 9:02PM EST

With fall practice starting on Monday, this will be the last in our fun little summer series of trivia questions. Remember that internet researching is discouraged, guessing is encouraged, you play by posting your guess as a comment to this post, and I reply as soon as I can to let you know if you're right or wrong.

This week's question is worded oddly. Stay with me...

Championship football Saturday was unique in 1993. Something happened that Saturday that had never happened before and hasn't happened since in the course of Wyoming's football history. What was it?

(See, confusing, right? Here's what I'm aiming for: Some or all of the winners of those championship games had something in common. What did they have in common?)

It's a weird way to end the summer, but give it a chance. Thanks for playing along all summer long; it's been fun.

All the home teams lost...

(blindfolded and throwing at the wall)

The mascot of all the winning teams was some form of Native American name.

Neither.... but Wass is sort of on the right track. Sort of.

All the home teams won

All the home teams won and were from the same part of the state.

DSet is close... very close...

Another hint: This is something that the 3A, 2A and 1A champs all had in common.

The 1A champ (Cokeville) beat the 2A (Big Piney or Pinedale?) and 3A (Kemmerer) champs during the regular season.

Nope... close still, but not quite.

All won and from the same county? I'm pretty sure that Sheridan won. So maybe Sheridan, Big Horn and Tongue River were champs? Just guessing.

Sean... right idea, wrong county.

Sheridan did win 4A that year... but they don't really figure in to the answer.

We're so close.... so I'll just spill it. In 1993, three champions -- Star Valley, Kemmerer and Cokeville -- all came from the same county (Lincoln). It's the only time that three state football champions have come from the same county.

What's more, all three played at home. Again, 1993 is the only year in which three teams from the same county have all hosted championship football games.

The state champions that year were all very dominant and the entire state recognized this county as a potential football central. Evanston also went to title game that year and lost, (50 miles from Kemmerer).
Go Rangers!!

JS96,
Your comment about all those 1993 teams being very dominant is a tad off. Yes, they were all state champs, which means they were very good, but dominant? Maybe some, but not all. I was at the semi-final game between Southeast and Cokeville in Yoder that year. This game still sticks out in my memory, except the part of why I chose to go to that one. Cokeville scored on their first two posessions, and then only crossed into SE territory once the rest of the game. Southeast started slow and then ran over, threw, and around Cokeville the rest of the game. If it wouldn't have been for two SE fumbles inside the Cokeville 20 late in the game, and a missed FG by SE, Cokeville would not have been champs. Now, with that said, yes, those things happened, and Cokeville won the game. However they did not dominate the game at all.

I agree with Greg SEHS should have won that semi-final game (that went into OT), and also "football central" in WYO had to be Sheridan HS. In 1993 SHS earned their 4th state championship in a row and a accumulated record of 38-2 over that same time period (which also included the only WYO HS to receive a USA Today Super-25 national ranking in '91).

I am not saying that the scores were dominating, or that any team that lost was being blown away, all I meant by domination is 3 schools from same county hosted, and defeated their opponents. That is Lincoln County domination!! Sheridan had a great run in the 90's, but when has their last title been? I'm throwing three programs in the argument saying they each were the leaders in the state with championships. Sheridan doesnt have more titles than Kemmerer, Cokeville and Start Valley. Did any other team near Sheridan do that at the same time the Bronc were kicking butt? It is pretty sweet that that happened, I'm just saying no other county in state has a tradition like Lincoln County. The Rangers will add another banner, making it their 6th state title. Go Rangers!!
