Fun-A
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on January 25, 2008 at 7:15PM EST

Sorry about the lack of updates recently, but I've been pondering a state tournament that could be more fun than a barrel of monkeys:

Class 1A girls.

It's already been an amazing year, and the best is yet to come. The classification is incredibly top-heavy, as Burlington (11-1), Southeast (11-2), St. Stephens (14-2), Arvada-Clearmont (10-1) and Cokeville (13-1) hold down the top five spots. Every single one has proven they deserve the No. 1 ranking, and believe me -- ordering them every week is one of the toughest tasks I have.

Past those five, though, there are several other teams that have dropped hints that they, too, could compete for a state championship, including Midwest (10-2), Kaycee (7-5) and Hulett (7-5) from the Northeast and Ten Sleep (8-3) and Fort Washakie (6-3) from the Northwest. Some deserving teams won't get past regionals.

This week might help provide some separation -- or maybe just create more parity. In the Northwest, Burlington plays Ten Sleep and St. Stephens (and the Burlington JV plays Fort Washakie in a game that counts in the conference standings), while in the Northeast, Kaycee plays Arvada-Clearmont and Midwest plays Hulett.

Southeast and Cokeville are the undisputed leaders in their respective conferences and might not be challenged by any Class 1A teams until regionals.

And the semifinals and finals of this year's state tournament could be among the best ever. The unbelievable parity of the top five teams all but guarantees that.

Sure, other classifications have similar parity. The difference between 1A girls and the rest of the state is that here we are in late January, and no clear leader (or pair of leaders) has emerged. Instead, the top five of 1A remains a mishmash, one that won't be cleared up until March 1 in Casper.

ya well i think that SE deserves the #1 Spot. those girls won't be tested by a 1A school because they don't play any. they play 2 and 3A schools. them playing a tough schedule like they are only makes them better

How does it work that SE doesn't play any 1A teams? Do they belong to a conference? Typically you play each conference team at least once and most twice.

i don't know how it works but the only 1A schools on the schedule is Saratoga. The Boys saw Kaycee at the Coal miners classic. they just play all those schools and then also go to Nebraska and play morrill, mitchell, bridgeport and Bayard those schools are very large and SE plays well against them

The way it works for the schools like Southeast, Saratoga, Guernsey, and other schools that are always on the 1A/2A line, is that they tend to keep their same schedule no matter what class they are in. If they tried to change their schedule everytime the numbers make them change classes, it would be a nightmare. I know Southeast and Guernsey both belong to the SEWAC conference, but for regional purposes, Southeast belongs to the 1A Southeast Conference with Saratoga, Rock River, Chugwater, and Glendo. They use a point system to seed those teams into the 1A East Regional, with the #4 and #5 seed playing a pigtail game to get in. And yes Chris, when looking at the teams that Southeast plays, Mitchell is large. Only Glenrock is bigger. Mitchell is up to 210 kids. Morrill, Bridgeport, and Bayard are all midlevel 2A teams according to Wyoming numbers.

I guess it's about perspective (I thought Newc. was HUGE when we moved here from Mitchell!)-I know we here in Newcastle have always been one of the smallest schools in our class (until lately)-& I like it like that! If you're going to play, why not challenge yourself?! Play against the biggest & best you can! (Hello Hickory!!)

ya that is one thing that the SE team has going for them is they play those tough teams. when they play tough teams when it comes regional time the kids are really prepared for anything. this team is tough and have seen some real talent
