Five on the rise (at the right time)
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on October 14, 2008 at 7:56PM EST

Here are five teams that are starting to hit their peaks at the right time of the year, in no particular order:

1. Top-ranked volleyball teams: It was a good week to be one of the top-ranked teams in the Star-Tribune's volleyball poll. Combined, Natrona County (2-0), Wheatland (1-0), Big Horn (1-0) and Cokeville (3-0) went 7-0 in their seven matches. Together, they lost only one game all weekend.

2. Cheyenne girls swimming: Central and East finished 1-2 at the Rawlins Invitational on Saturday. Central had the most points -- 388 to East's 290 -- but East had more event winners -- seven to Central's four.

3. Burns football: The Broncs won two games in a span of four days, topping Sundance 47-6 on Friday and Saratoga 46-0 on Monday.

4. Kelly Walsh girls swimming: The Fish Bowl is always a big pride meter for the Casper swimming teams. This year, it was the Trojans that came out on top. And that's momentum KW can carry into regionals next week.

5. Snow: For the first time this fall, we all got reminded who's in charge for real. Snow moved a bunch of events around and caused a few to be canceled. Be careful out there.

I don't think Burns should be commended for beating the snot out of a Saratoga team that has been through an emotional rollercoaster over the past 10 days. Those 'toga boys left everything on the field Friday against Lusk and clearly were not going to be in any position to put up a fight three days later. They get just three days off this week before Pinedale comes to town.
Three small Wyoming towns have already lost a young athlete and the school year is only six weeks old- it isn't supposed to be this way.
Shame on you Broncs for running up the score yesterday!!

K2 TV announced tonight that both Emily Rochelle of Kelly Walsh and MacKenzie Bartsch of Natrona will be playing VB at UW next year. These are two of the best of this year's senior VB players.

Cory,
If Saratoga didn't want to play they would have just forfeited. And Burns called off the dogs plenty early (quarter scores 20-13-7-6). What did you want Burns to do, exactly?

It was an unfortunate situation for both schools and Burns also had just 3 days rest. I was just trying to say that there are a lot of coaches that have never been in a position of grief counseling, on both sides of the field or court. its a delicate situation and i dont want to cause bad feelings. maybe these wounds can bring wyoming high schools closer together.

Cory,
The Burns score could have been a lot worse than it actually was. The coaches were pulling kids early and often on offense and subbed pretty frequently on the defensive side of the ball also from what I saw. If you weren't there don't make any judgements. Just because the kids from Saratoga gave Lusk all they could handle doesn't mean you need to whine about it.
If memory serves me correctly the Burns students went through the same situation at Saratoga did just 4-5 years ago. They know what Saratoga is going through and I don't think any of the coaches or players were trying to run the score up because if they had wanted to it could have been worse than it was in my opinion.

Our goal each and everytime we step onto a field is to play our best. As coaches we talked about all the possibilities with our game against Burns. There has been a lot of emotion shown by our kids. They played their hearts out against Lusk. The coaching staff at Lusk has been really supportive of us, but also have a ton of other schools including Burns.

Coach Hayes has been reminding our kids that there is a brotherhood between football players and coaches. Yeah, we all want to win on Friday, but when tragedy happens, we support one another.

There have been several communities affected this year, including Big Horn, which just lost an 8th grade student athlete. Keep everyone in your prayers.

I can guarentee one thing, the Panthers are healing and we are still fighting and clawing to make it to the playoffs!

apparently i wasn't very clear...so never mind

Cory,
What were you not clear on? You called out the Burns football team and said they ran the score up on Saratoga. I do think there was maybe a little let down in emotion etc... on Saratoga's part. That is a tough thing to overcome and it had to be hard on them. I think the Saratoga kids did play hard and I was proud of them for playing even though they are dealing with some very tough circumstances. The people in the Burns community wish Saratoga the best of luck the rest of the year and would love to see that TEAM make the playoffs.

Burns has an exceptional team. They have a great offensive line that fires off and opens some big holes for 2 very tuff running backs. (Vossler & Petsch).
I do not feel that Burns ran the score up. Looking back, the only thing that we should have done was maybe scheduled it for Tuesday.
Our kids (Encampment & Saratoga) student bodies are suffering, but the kids are showing their courage as they continue to load buses and compete.
A forfeit only came to my mind once, and that was when I looked our players in the eyes and realized that they were really hurting from this tragedy.
I think we earned a lot of respect from Lusk. For us it was just about getting back to being as normal as possible.
We thank every school, team, and community that is offering its help getting through this. But also, we keep Wright and Dubois deep in our minds.
Athletes are in a great fraternity. We may line up and compete on Fridays, but you will walk away with a lifelong bond.

Off topic: I really appreciate the coaches that take the time to comment here on the goulash and give us their perspective. It helps to emind all of us that Wyoming is really more like a single large community (geographically) and that those of us whom are not student athletes really aren't "opponents" at all.

OSP,

You may be right that "Emily Rochelle of Kelly Walsh and MacKenzie Bartsch of Natrona" are "two of the best of this year's senior VB players" but who are the top 5 VB plays in Wyo. I would say Emily and MacKenzie are in for sure so to is Kelly Burns of Jackson. I'm not sure who would round out the other two spots though. Who do you think?
