Odds and ends of Wyoming high school sports.
Check it out: Impossible Trivia Thursday
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on May 29, 2008 at 7:22PM EST

To help get us through the summer, we're going to start a new weekly feature here on Sports Goulash -- Impossible Trivia Thursday. Each week, I'll pose a tough-as-nails trivia question about high school sports in Wyoming. You get to answer.

Now, the rules:

1. The big rule is NO RESEARCHING! That means no Google, no WHSAA, no other assorted help. If the answer ain't in your noggin, then you'll just have to wait. I don't want this to become a battle of who can find the answer the fastest -- I want it to be a battle of who knows it the fastest. I'm trusting y'all to play nice.

2. Post your answer with a comment underneath this post. If you're right, I'll say so. If you're wrong, I'll say so. A lot of this is on me to reply to the answer ASAP, and I'll do my best to do so. But don't wait for me if you think you have the correct answer -- post it as soon as you can, and I'll get to it as soon as I can.

3. There will be a 24-hour time limit, more or less, for you to answer. If no one answers correctly in the time limit, I'll post the answer in a comment.

4. After the correct answer is posted, feel free to discuss away... and the discussion will lead where it may.

That said.... have some fun with this. This is all designed to be in good fun.

Now, this week's question, posted in honor of our fearless sports editor, Jack Nowlin: Who was the last state wrestling champion from Jeffrey City High School?

Bonus question: In what year did he win state, and at what weight class?

Go!

Great question! And, no, I didn't know the answer, although I was guessing in the right decade. And the guy I named probably should have won a state title, but I don't think that earns me any bonus points.

I'll be very interested to see some of the responses.

Jimmy Allington

I only know 1 person that graduated from Jeffrey City(actually I know 2...his wife, but I doubt it would be her). I don't think he wrestled, but it will be as good a guess as anyone else. Short of calling him(I gathered that would be cheating), I'll let my guess stand.

Not Jimmy Allington.

That was in my time era but was in a different classification from the teams we wrestled. So no I didn't know the answer but you can't pose a question like that to a wresting nut like myself and not expect me to look it up!! But I will play nice and keep it to myself. I will however add this small piece of trivia that I discovered with my research. The wrestling program at Jeffery City only existed for 6 years and other than our mystery state champion there was only one other person who ever even placed at state for Jeffery City and his name was ED Baxter. Sorry Patrick but I couldn't help myself :-) I wonder if our mystery man still lives in Wyoming?

167wrestler -- If there was a perfect "Impossible Trivia" post, that's it. Thanks for playing fair. :)

That said, I'm not sure what our mystery state champ is up to these days.

I didn't even know Jeffrey City had its own wrestling program until I stumbled across this guy's name in our archive. I know JC was close to having a football program, too, but it never got off the ground.

OK, time's up, more or less...

The last state wrestling champ from Jeffrey City was Jamie Evans. He won the 2A 112-pound weight class in 1980.

What was Jeffery City's masscot? anybody know?

Also since we are on the subject of wrestling trivia I would like to know how many Father / Son State champions there have been in Wyoming over the years? I know of 2 sets and thats because one of them is myself and my son and the other is the kid I beat for the championship my junior year and his son. I will start the list and anybody that knows of others please post!

1- Rick Walker (father) 145# 1982 & 167# 1983
Zack Walker (Son) 135# 2007 (Star Valley)

2- Kirby Wilson (father) 132# 1981 (Wheatland)
Kurtis Wilson (Son) 215# 2008 (Wheatland)

Nevin Jacobs was a two time state champion in 1973 at #155 and 1974 at #167. His son Eric was a state champion in 2005 at #152 and his son Andy was a state champion in 2006 at #215. (Powell)

The Khans from Sheridan. The father Nazir was champion '76 @ 98#, '77 @ 105# & '78 @ 112#. He had twin sons Usman ('02 @ 112#) and Suliaman ('03 @ 103#).

I don't know that much about the families in Cokeville, but there always seems to be a champion with the last name Teichert, Pope or Peterson.
