All-Sports Awards 2008
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on May 24, 2008 at 8:57PM EST

Here are this year's final tallies in the Casper Star-Tribune's All-Sports Awards. Sunday's paper is chock full of more information, so check it out.

In the meantime, here is an early, exclusive look at this year's final point totals.

NOTE: Points are awarded based on finishes at state-culminating events, and banners are awarded to the winning schools in the three categories at the end of the school year. Ties are broken by the number of state championships (in parenthesis). Schools not listed did not score. x-total points set new overall class record; y-total points set or tied school record.

Reading the awards list it is intertesting to see how the schools who regularly change classifications afect the outcome of the scores espeially in the lower classes.Saratoga and Southeast could have changed the outcome in both 1a and 2a this year.I don't mean this as any sour grapes just an observation.Wacthing there atletes perform this year was a pleasure. Good luck to all of their seniors in what ever their future holds

Before anybody gets to angry, I know that this is probably not the forum for this, but I'm going to make this statement anyway. I checked the state track meet results from both the Dakotas, and it looks like the athletes from the Cowboy State would stack up pretty well. Of course their meets were this past weekend, so the weather may not have been too good. But it was fun to see the comparisons, regardless of classifications.

Patrick, how are points awarded to schools that combine for sports like Encampment (w/ Saratoga for FB), Greybull and Riverside (for WR), or Lingle and Burns (w/ Central for Indoor T&F)?

Kevin, I also compared WYO "Best of the Best" performances with NE and CO. WYO bettered NE (3 x larger) in 14 out of 28 individual events, WYO bettered CO (9 x larger) in 6 out of 28 individual events. Both cases the WYO kids out performed the other states by twice the statistical probability.

Kevin, here in ND our state meet (a two day event) was halted multiple times for ridiculous weather. I am not sure how times were affected, but the delays could not have helped with preparations for events. I heard the weather in Casper was not too bad this year.

tmillerwyo -- Right now, we split points for schools that do a full-on co-opt. This year, that included the Greybull-Riverside wrestling, Sublette swimming, etc. In the past we've also done this for a few other co-op wrestling programs (Kaycee-Midwest, Burns-Pine Bluffs, Rocky Mountain-Burlington off the top of my head). Basically, the guideline we use is that if the schools split practices and home meets/games equally at both schools, then we give each school half the points they earn. In part, that's why Saratoga gets all the points for the the Encampment-Saratoga football, or why Central gets all the indoor points despite having members from Lingle and Burns score points for them, as well. It would be impossible to split those All-Sports Award points up by individuals and wouldn't really be in the spirit of the All-Sports Awards anyway. Hope that helps explain it.

And Brady, the weather was beautiful in Casper for state track. It's the first time in my three years here that there wasn't a weather delay. I'm just glad they didn't have it a week later.
