A brand new five on the rise for you lucky people
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on January 23, 2008 at 1:07AM EST

This week's homage to Bob, the five on the rise, in "no particular order":

1. Douglas wrestling: The Bearcats have been one of 3A's top teams all season, but this weekend's victory at the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis (by a scant 10 points over Powell) helped cement Douglas' claim to a frontrunners' spot at state.

2. Kemmerer boys basketball: The Rangers don't have any quit in them. They were down 10 points after one quarter against Jackson on Saturday, but came back to win by that amount (10). Comeback victories are good signs for teams that just need a little confidence to be a threat, and that's what the Rangers are now.

3. Rock Springs gymnastics: With Gillette taking the weekend off, it was the Tigers' turn to shine at the Kelly Walsh Invitational, placing first with 95.900 team points. On a good day like that, Rock Springs can challenge for first at state; the trick now is just following through.

4. Natrona County girls basketball: A 2-0 start to West Conference play, with a victory AT Evanston? Can't get much better for the Fillies.

5. Ten Sleep boys basketball: Still undefeated. 'Nuff said.

There it is, this week's five. Add to it below, and pay your respects to Bob.

well i think one of the hottest teams right now is pinedale. they have won 7 of their last 9 games, and are on a 4 or 5 game win streak. don't catch this team on the wrong night!

You featured Green River wrestling for five on the rise last week for placing 4th at last weeks Vernal Tournament of Champions. That was a tough 40 team tournament.
This week I think you left out Rock Springs wrestling. Remember, they took 7th at the Vernal without one of their top studs. Now this weekend, they placed a strong 3rd place(one point out of second) at the much tougher, 60 team field in Orem, Utah Rocky Mountain Rumble. 60 teams!!

I must agree with werb15. I saw the double overtime win that pinedale had against kemmerer at kemmerer. that raney kid hit a couple of gutsy 3's in the overtime periods to keep the wranglers in it. They are a scrappy team with enough talent to beat even the best teams.

I really think you are overlooking the Newcastle Lady Dogies. They are playing well, even with a loss to Torrington. They will qualify for state this year, and SURPRISE someone!

Ten Sleep is gonna take a whoopin this weekend, Nuff said.

Lady Dogies are looking salty! They played with Torrington throughout, & took it to Glenrock, to end their 9 game win streak! I like their stock!! I apologize in advance for not making it tomorrow, Gary, I have swimming in Spearfish tomorrow! (& hopefully a college indoor meet will be going on as well!!) GO DOGIES!!!

The Wind River Cougars boys basketball is 18-0, beating rivals like Wyoming Indian (very tough team) as well as Lander. Let's give these guys some credit!

My sympathies to you Mr. Gray!

Perhaps someone should check Wind Rivers Schedule. I thought the WHSAA had a limit on the number of games a team can play in a season. 20 contest limit. In that you can play in 2 tournaments that must count for 2 contests each. That means you could only have 16 other games, doesn't it? Is there a limit to how many games a team can play in a tournament and still have it count for only 2 contests? 18 games before the 1st of Feb? Looks to me like they may be over the limit somewhere!!!!

HS Sports Fan -- By my count, Wind River is in under the limit. You get 20 contests, included in that are three tournaments that count as two. WR has played eight regular games so far and 10 games in their three tournaments (10 games basically for the price of six; played three games in the Greybull-Riverside tourney, three games at Wind River-Wyo Indian, and four games at Fremont County Shootout). So that's 14 "contests," and the Cougars have six games remaining on their schedule. At least by my count, they're OK. Hope that clears it up.

Patrick - It does! Thanks. I thought that a team could only play in two tournaments. That definitely accounts for the extra games. Hey, by the way - Thanks for doing such a great job moderating this site. Not as lively as the football conversations, but still nice dialogue.

Wow! Crazy weekend for 3A. A couple of upsets and I believe there will be a new #1 next week. Any early thoughts???? I have got to think that Buffalo will get the nod. They aren't winning by much, but they are winning! We will see what happens next week when they go to Wheatland!
