Odds and ends of Wyoming high school sports.
2A-1A state tourney odds
Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on February 27, 2008 at 11:45PM EST

Odds. You know.

BOYS
Class 2A
Wind River: 2-1

Yes, you read that right. Going 27-0 in the regular season only earns you a 50-50 chance of winning the state tournament. Don't forget, the last two Class 2A boys teams to make it to the state championship game undefeated lost -- Wyoming Indian in 1994 and Lusk in 2001.

Sundance: 3-1
The Bulldogs have the talent and athleticism to beat any team in the bracket.

Wyoming Indian: 4-1
Their odds increase tremendously if they don't have to play Wind River on Saturday night -- the Chiefs are 0-4 against the Cougs this season.

Lusk: 5-1
Don't count out the Tigers, who are 22-3 and know how to win.

Tongue River: 8-1
The Eagles have maybe the best player in the bracket in Rob Johnson.

Thermopolis: 10-1
The Bobcats haven't been setting the world on fire lately, but they have the goods to pull off three consecutive victories.

Riverside, Guernsey: 30-1
They have the misfortune of tough first-round opponents. But if they win on Thursday, watch out, because that momentum alone might be enough to propel one of these teams into Saturday.

Class 1A
Burlington: 3-1

The Huskies have the talent, the athleticism, the cohesiveness and the tradition to do amazing things this weekend.

Saratoga: 4-1
The East Regional champs are for real. They have the size and speed to stick with any team in the bracket. It'd be no surprise to see them hoist the trophy on Saturday night.

Kaycee: 7-1
The Buckaroos are loaded with talent. Just not depth. If fouls and fatigue stay away, Kaycee might be there on Saturday night.

Encampment: 10-1
I'm still trying to figure out where the Tigers went wrong last weekend.

Southeast, Hanna: 15-1
When these two near-.500 teams meet, someone has to win. And whoever does might be the most confident team you'll see in the semis.

Snake River: 20-1
Better than you think.

Midwest: 30-1
Midwest's size could create problems -- both for their opponents, who can't match up, and for the Oilers themselves, who could struggle against athletic, running teams.

GIRLS
Class 2A
Mountain View: 2.5-1

That Tongue River-Big Horn rematch everyone wants to see? Don't tell the Buffalos about it.

Tongue River: 3-1
Talented and confident is a great way to come to state.

Big Horn: 4-1
As long as the Rams don't have to play Tongue River on Saturday night, they've got a great shot -- 0-3 vs. TR, 19-0 vs. everyone else.

Thermopolis: 7-1
Looking for a surprise winner in 2A? Look right here. If the Bobcats get rolling, bar the door.

Wyoming Indian: 10-1
No matter what, if the Lady Chiefs want to win the championship, they're going to have to win three tough games. WI has no room for error.

Wright: 20-1
The best of the rest.

Riverside, Burns: 30-1
Both teams had the misfortune of playing in weak conferences -- and that weakness showed at regionals.

Class 1A
Burlington, Southeast: 3-1

Yes, I'm cheating. But my jaw will be agape if it's not the Huskies and Cyclones meeting in Saturday's championship.

Arvada-Clearmont, St. Stephens, Cokeville: 7-1
All season long, five teams have separated themselves as the class of 1A. And two of those have separated from the other three. These are the other three -- talented enough to win the championship, but they'll need some help (a hot shooting night, foul trouble for someone else, the right pre-game meal, anything) to win it all.

Kaycee: 10-1
The Lady Bucs have been up and down all season. If they get up at the right time this weekend....

Hulett, Ten Sleep: 30-1
If any 4 seed is going to win on Thursday, it's Hulett in that noon "eye crusties" game against Burlington. I'm not saying it'll happen, but I'm saying it's the most likely. BTW, props to the Ten Sleep girls for making it to state with only five players on the roster.

There they are. Who do you think is going to win the championships this weekend? Comment below with your thoughts, and then get out to the Events Center on Saturday and enjoy it -- even if your picks are wrong.

Hey Patrick,

How bout an "open thread" where commenters can enter scores and observations from state and regional games? Often times us fans can post (unofficial) results and story lines long before they come through the regular channels. Thanks..

2A Boys - Sundance over Wind River in a great game. The Cougars are a lot of fun to watch and the Dogs have only lost to one WY team all year (3A Newcastle). One of these teams will get their first banner. Just going with my gut on this one.
2A Girls - Big Horn over Tongue River in matchup number 4 this year. Think it's hard to beat somebody three times in one season, try four. I'd take MV if there star wasn't injured.
1A Boys - Burlington over Saratoga. The Huskies are legit, as are the the Panthers. Burlington's championship game experience wins this one for em.
1A Girls - Burlington over Southeast. Don't know a lot about this classification, but I have seen the Huskies twice this year and they are very good, and young.
Congrats to all the teams playing at the State Tourney this weekend. I'm sure you will represent your school's and community's with class! Go Rebs!

I became a big fan of Wind River after they shelacked riverton at the Shootout. That is a quality team that also beat a pretty good Lander team in the shootout championship. I'm picking this team to win it all, I think they could win 3a too

Posted by: 1aBBall fan on February 28, 2008 12:45PM EST
1a boy: Depending on how this very young team from yoder comes out and plays i see either southeast/saratoga winning it all, Burlington is a great team but one of the other teams will come out hot off big wins.
1a Girls: Burlington girls are a great great basketball team, but they have yet to meet up with the lady cyclones. The seniors from southeast are very close and they want to win. Im excited to see how it comes out. Good luck to all the players and coaches

Posted by: JA on February 28, 2008 2:25PM EST
Xcskier,
I highly doubt they could win 3A too. Riverton is one of the top 3 worst 4A schools and were the door mat for a lot of 3A teams as well. They only beat an up and down Lander team by 4... I would say if they played 3A they maybe a middle of the pack squad that would be extremely happy making a run to get into state.

Posted by: Valleyboy on February 28, 2008 4:22PM EST
JA i would have to agree with about windriver i watched them play mtn viewl andthey were in the game until the end and mtn view is not a very good team, they have some good athletes but think they would be middle of the pach in 3A

Posted by: Cory on February 28, 2008 5:27PM EST
I guess we'll all see how good the Cougars are. They only beat Guernsey by 15 and face a Lusk team that has been right behind them in the polls all season. The Tigers didn't thump Thermopolis like some expected, but will cause some matchup problems for the Cougars. If Sundance wins later tonight, then the 2A boys final four will be a lot of fun to watch (regardless of who wins the WIHS/TR game)

You guys are doing awesome work over there! Keep it up!

Posted by: Cory on February 29, 2008 12:52AM EST
I just got done watching the webcast of the TR/WIHS game. OT Tongue survives with Rob Johnson fouled out of the game.
Looking at the brackets, there's gonna be some great basketball to watch in the next two days.

Posted by: i love bball on February 29, 2008 2:13AM EST
You guys are all crazy. southeast girls are going to win state, and i would be surprised if they have any problem doing it. have you ever watched them play? they're a great team.

Posted by: 2afanatic on March 1, 2008 5:20PM EST
the only reason tongue river isn,t in the finals tonite against lusk is becuase of the officials getting rob johnson out the game as fast as they could for sundance period .who were those buyoffs

Posted by: 2Aguru on March 2, 2008 2:23AM EST
2afanatic, first of all, think about what you are saying. Sundance already started making a run on Tongue River WHILE Rob was still in. If the refs supposedly, "were tryin to get him out of the game as fast as they could", wouldn't he of fouled out long before the end of the 4th quarter?? Yes i do believe so. And another reason, other than yours, that Tongue River didnt make the final game is Sundance had beat them by a 19 and 17 point previously. Face the facts, Sundance was simply the better team. Period!!

Posted by: Cory on March 2, 2008 5:08AM EST
NCHS Tigers win 2A Boys title, great basketball game to watch against Sundance, even better since the trophy comes back to Lusk, for the first time since 1982 (before this team was even born).
The state tournament was basketball at it finest, lots of good games to watch.
Southeast ladies win three games, like most people thought might happen. Tongue River/Big Horn met in the 2A girls finals, like most people thought... but BH got the win at the right time. After the top 3-4 schools, there's a lot of work to be done across the state from other programs in both 1A and 2A.
1A boys- Cyclones make great run to championship game but lose heartbreaker to Encampment, as Tigers hit a shot with less than 2 seconds to go to win. Southeast has some nice young players and will make some noise next year. Burlington (3rd) and Kaycee (Consolation) came back after tough losses to eventual champ Encampment to win trophies.
2A boys--if you didn't see either semifinal game, you missed some great games and teams that would compete with the better 3A and 4A schools.
Way to go NCHS Tigers!!!!

Posted by: HS Sports Fan on March 2, 2008 2:30PM EST
Great Job to all the teams! 1A Champs - Encampment Tigers - Coach Peterson is proud!!!!

Posted by: Bulldog Fan on March 2, 2008 3:43PM EST
2afanatic....I should just ignore a post such as yours, but I can't. The fouls in that game were 24 for Sundance and 28 for TR. Pretty even. Foul trouble for Sundance: Emrick, Humphrey, Hadden, Moore. Robbie fouled out with 30 seconds left in regulation. The Bulldogs outplayed the Eagles, period. I will say that I lost a lot of respect for Coach Moser when he would not shake Moore's hand. As a coach that behavior was uncalled for.
Congrats to the Lusk Tigers. They played a better game than the Bulldogs in the championship game. These 2 teams enjoy playing each other and the sportsmanship between the players was great. It has been a great season. Our Bulldogs finished higher than any team from Sundance ever has. Wish it could have been first, but not this time. We are going to miss this class of seniors. I want to wish them good luck with their future plans.

Posted by: Tigerfan on March 2, 2008 5:56PM EST
i got one thing to say and that HOW ABOUT THEM TIGERS. lusk came in and won the entire thing. congrats.

Posted by: BLynch on March 2, 2008 7:33PM EST
All I gotta say is GO TIGERS!! Encampment and Lusk! Thanks to patrick for the 10-1 odds it helped in motivating our 1A Tigers to our first boys championship ever!!

Posted by: MDOEBELE on March 2, 2008 11:31PM EST
ENCAMPMENT TIGERS PLAYED HARD ALL YEAR AND ARE VERY DESERVING FOR FIRST 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE---GOOD JOB MEN!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: FAB 5 on March 3, 2008 12:19PM EST
The SEWAC prevailed in this years state tourney. Both Southeast teams in the championships. Lusk winning and Guernsey playing in the consolation. The Southeast Corner of the state really showed that you have to be tough to play down here

Posted by: retired coach on March 3, 2008 12:49PM EST
I'd say the northeast prevailed. Sundance boys in championship game, Tongue River and Big Horn Girls in the Championship game. Arvada/Clearmont girls in Championship game. Tongue River boys, Kaycee and Wright girls in the third place game and Kaycee boys in the consolation game. So that is 8 teams from the northeast and 4 from southeast in games mentioned, so which conference prevailed?

Posted by: CAT FAN on March 3, 2008 5:10PM EST
Who do you think will be the teams to watch for next year. Burlington will be good again so will southeast. Upton is was young this year and play good defence. i think that next year it will be up for grabs again.

Posted by: #1 Eagle fan on March 3, 2008 5:26PM EST
Congrats to Lusk Tigers. Not just for winning state but for being able to do what no other 2A, a 3A and a 4A school could do this season, beat Wind River. I really feel that Wind River is the best team in the state but this is why we play all the games. Right? As far as the Sundance/TR game goes, it didn't come down to just the 5th foul on Robby Johnson, the third foul he got was crap, two guys on him on the baseline pushing him, he falls out of bounds and gets an offensive foul called? His fourth foul he went up and blocked Dude's shot, boom! Another bogus call and then the fifth foul. The Sundance crowd (except maybe for Bulldog fan and 2Aguru) could not believe it either. The official either had money on the game or was sleeping with O'connor. (I hope he had money on the game) It''s hard to believe that the leading shot blocker in the entire state for the last 3 years got the fifth foul called in a crucial game by a referee that was completely out of position on a great block. Oh well, life goes on and that ref knows what he did and why. But the Bulldogs had a great year and I am sure Cody will have great success where ever he goes. And O'connor will continue to teach his players how to "flop" and the officials of Wyoming will continue to suck. See ya'll next year!

WHAT ABOUT ENCAMPMENT?

Posted by: bulldogs_4life on March 3, 2008 10:56PM EST
Sounds like to me that #1 Eagle fan is a little upset and cant face the facts that Sundance was better than TR and always had been the whole year, Oh, and i dont remember ever being taught how to flop...must be mad you dont have a trophy and lost to us 3 times...sorry

Posted by: CAT FAN on March 3, 2008 11:25PM EST
Sure the Encampment will be tuff next year but didnt they lose quite a bit

Posted by: Bulldog Fan on March 3, 2008 11:32PM EST
#1 Eagle Fan....I didn't say the fouls were all good calls, I just said they were pretty even and that Johnson didn't foul out until late in the fourth quarter. That was in response to 2afanatic's ridiculous comment. I still feel that Sundance outplayed TR. Many of the Sundance players were playing with 4 fouls and not all of them were good calls either. Humphrey also fouled out. I totally agree with you on the charging foul on Johnson. I brought up the charging foul calls in an earlier post in an effort to try and understand it. Basically it is a judgement call interpreted by the official. I have no way of knowing what O'Connor teaches his players, but I have seen that tactic in many games & from many teams and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have even laughed at how stupid some of the players look when they try it. I would venture to say it is as much a part of the game as a pump fake shot. I've seen players draw the foul with also.

Posted by: Cory on March 4, 2008 1:23AM EST
There were several calls in many games that seemed a bit odd in their timing. And, we saw a lot of games where fouls were called in the regular season, but not at regionals or state.
there is a definite shortage of officials and with three-man crews coming full time (finally) the state needs more. Not everyone can do that job, but as one with 11 years experience as a baseball umpire, it gets very draining physically and mentally as the season culminates. They do the best they can and maybe the state needs more/better training, in all sports.
I won't believe there were any payoffs of officials, at least i hope not in Wyoming yet.
hey BulldogFan--tough way for your seniors to go out-this class has had a great rivalry. Next year's teams will both look a lot different when you visit Lusk for football.

Posted by: #1 Eagle Fan on March 4, 2008 10:37AM EST
bulldogs_4life, It was obvious that Sundance was better than the Eagles the first two times. At Sundance the Eagles played the bulldogs and the officials pretty tough. Once again handsome Mike Delancy and completely out of shape Alan Patz did a number on Johnson. It was the 17th game of the season for the Eagles and Johnson had not had one offensive foul called on him and in this game, he had three. Once again everyone thought O'connor was having a threesome with these guys. Johnson fouls out, I think in the third quarter (sound familiar) and the rest is history. Cody had a great night and I must say that Moore did a nice job of guarding Johnson. The second time they met, Johnson had 34 points of the team's 54. The younger guys didn't showup to play that night. But at the tournament they had a great game plan, contained Cody (you're not going to stop him) and had them until the nice man in stripes who loved to stand at half court and place his hands oh so lady-like on his hips, got involved. Upset yes, but I watched the facts unfold of a game that the officials gave to Sundance. And in regards to the "flop", maybe coach only taught the players that got to play. Sundance can be proud of the season they had. Great group of Seniors.

Posted by: Buffs fan on March 4, 2008 11:09AM EST
Just wanted to say congratulations to the Big Horn girls. Our Lady Buffs took two tough losses at their hands this year (in the state VB finals and then again in the semi-finals in basketball.) Although that hurt pretty bad, I really admire the program the Lady Rams have. Their coach shows a lot of class and really teaches those girls fundamentals in both sports. The girls fight hard, play with a lot of heart, and just don't make many mistakes. They also conduct themselves with class both on and off the court. Congratulations to a quality group of kids!

Posted by: HS Sports Fan on March 4, 2008 11:14PM EST
#1 Eagle Fan - I think your comments about a referee and a coach are a little over the edge. We can have great conversations here without making comments like those. Remember - these referees and coaches have families just like you do and don't deserve to be drug through the mud to make you feel better about losing.

Posted by: #1 Eagle Fan on March 5, 2008 11:03AM EST
HS Sports Fan, You are probably right. My comments were a little over the edge. I don't really think the coach and referees were having a sexual relationship. I do feel that the referee does have a feminine look about him though. Just my opinion. I don't really care if they have a family or not, the kids that he screwed over have families too. I would like to literally drag him through the mud! The ref from Cokeville has no business doing state games. HE IS TERRIBLE! Once again, he knows what he did and why.

Posted by: michael hawk on March 5, 2008 12:00PM EST
SE will be very tough next year. both boys and girl. The boys just started getting in the flow come very late in the season and the girls were tough all year. the boys seem to return alot as well losing 2 seniors from a 8 deep bench they should be good to go. and the girls return Callie shafer good luck stopping her

Posted by: Seymour B. on March 5, 2008 12:06PM EST
Of course the SEWAC seems to be tough. theres several young teams down there that are going to be very tested next year and the following year. Yes Michael Hawk you are correct the SE boys started hitting their stride in the postseason and we can expect good things from them in the future. the girls as well only lose 3 seniors. Lusk and Guernsey boys are losing quite a bit, but Lusk has a good group coming up.

Posted by: Bulldog Fan on March 5, 2008 4:38PM EST
Sundance will have a rough road next year. Losing 7 seniors (8 if you include(injured) Newlin) is going to mean a rebuilding year or two. And so it goes in small schools.

Posted by: CAT FAN on March 5, 2008 4:51PM EST
Upton will be tuff next year. They will be right there with Southeast. This year they biggest lose was by 13 (if you dont count sundance) watch out for the Bobcats

Posted by: baller4life on March 7, 2008 8:16PM EST
Michael Hawk--first of all you think SE boys has a bench? We watched this team play at state and wasn't it the bench players that cost them the game? Toga should have been in the championship with Burlington. Certainly not SE. And Callie who? She has one move but if she goes up against someone who is bigger, better and uses their body---she can be stopped. Oh yeah--wont you guys be 1A again? Good thing though, either of your teams wouldn't have been able to compete in 2A. Wind River---you boys put on one heck of a show!! AWESOME! The ship should be yours!
