If the state isn't going to listen to the schools, why do they ask them what their preferences are? Just to prove the schools have no input? Or do you have to be from the "right" school?

Somebody must hate Casper Natrona.

Riverside plays Pinedale and not Greybull 8 miles away. They are joking right?

Posted by: Confused on November 11, 2008 9:38PM EST
Patrick,

Can you give us a complete understanding of the WHSAA's tie to the schools?

My understanding (Although weak) is that the WHSAA is not "the state" it is its own little organization.

I also know the legislature complains about the amount of money spent on activities.

I also know that the schools feel like they are at the WHSAA's mercy in terms of what they offer, what schedules are and so on.

So... what is the link between the "state", the WHSAA, and the schools?

Posted by: Wright Panther Fan on November 11, 2008 10:08PM EST
WOW what a surprise Glenrock and Kemmer are playing down a divison once again.. Its bs these schools are stealing state championships from 3A schools now.. I mean Glenrock did beat Buffalo and Douglas this year.. both of those teams are playing for 4A state this weekend.. There is no reason why these two school should not stay in class 3A next Year..

Posted by: K on November 11, 2008 10:35PM EST
Glenrock and Kemmerer are in the same "division" they have always been in. What was 3A in football this year is pretty much 2A next year with the addition of Greybull and I think one other school. Kemmerer will have around 170 kids in high school next year. About the same as Wright.

Posted by: sports fan on November 11, 2008 10:53PM EST
Wright is always in the 140s for students. Not that big of a difference but a difference none the less.

Posted by: Gridiron on November 11, 2008 10:53PM EST
Maybe Wright Panther Fan should look at the ADM figures on the WHSAA website before making a comment about "stealing state championships". Using your system with Glenrock and Kemmerer in 3A the largest school would be Riverton at 814 and the smallest would be Kemmerer at 211. The real system will be 2A's largest school Newcastle at 265 and the smallest Tongue River at 142. The latter obviously seems more equitable so I don't how anyone is "stealing" championships. Maybe Wright should send their players to Glenrock or Kemmerer during the summer to see how much hard work is put in the weight rooms and summer camps to see how championship teams are made, then you too could "steal" one of these championships. Oh yeah, it's a whole lot easier to whine on a blog.

Posted by: Anonymous on November 11, 2008 10:59PM EST
What is up with taking away the Glenrock vs. Douglas game? It is one of the biggest rivalries and they just take it away, whats up with that? Also its 30 minutes away, what could go wrong there?

Posted by: coach247 on November 11, 2008 11:01PM EST
Lovell, Greybull, & Wyoming Indian; 3 Schools within 100 miles (2 within 70 miles) and Thermopolis' closest game is Glenrock at 150 miles. ASININE!!!!!

Posted by: sports fan on November 11, 2008 11:10PM EST
You will always find differences in school sizes, the thing that I do not like is now that we went away from power rankings and to straight schedule that the schedule is unbalanced. For example in 2A which was the old 3A there are teams that get to play 1A schools while the others play 2A. This does not seem to be fair scheduling. I wish since they are using records that 2A schools would play their teams in confrence and then for their 1 out of confrence game it would be another 2A school from the other confrence. With the same amount of teams in each confrence should work out great and you could rotate who you play from the other confrence each year

Sports fan,

Great point. I agree that would make perfect sense, but when talking about the WHSAA common sense isn't usually used .

Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on November 11, 2008 11:58PM EST
Glenrock-Douglas, Greybull-Riverside, Thermopolis-anyone: Yeah. How in the world did you people NOT see this coming when the WHSAA announced the conference alignments for football and its plans for scheduling? This is NOT AT ALL surprising to see those games go away. Look at the conference alignments there. Eight teams in a conference. That's seven conference games. One non-conference game for everybody. To put it simply, there is no flexibility for the WHSAA there. And there's no way the WHSAA can match everyone's request for that one non-conference game. Won't happen.

I know the WHSAA talked about scheduling an East vs. West for 2A and 1A, and they also talked about scheduling so it would be 2A East vs. 1A East (or 2A West vs. 1A West). Eventually, they must have decided that mixing the two was the best answer; it allowed msot teams to play somebody of their caliber while keeping a few more schools closer to home that first week.

This is a quote from a story I wrote on Sept. 28: "Scheduling ramifications might be the only new wrinkle that could derail the proposal.
In the proposed system, there would no longer be conferences in Class 4A, as all 10 teams would play a round-robin schedule against each other in a nine-game regular season, with the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs. And at Class 2A and Class 1A-11-man, teams would play a seven-game conference schedule with only one chance for a non-conference game. "

Once again, how did y'all not see this coming in September?

Confused --

This might be the best answer to your question:

http://www.whsaa.org/whsaainformation/background.asp

Basically, the WHSAA is tied to the state education system only through the schools themselves; the WHSAA is not an arm of the state education department. Schools pay dues to the WHSAA to gain sanctions for their sports and for the right to play in regional and state tournaments that the WHSAA organizes.

As far as scheduling, football is the only sport that the WHSAA schedules (and Ron Laird has said on several occasions that if the schools want to have the football schedling duties back, he'd be more than happy to give it to them, especially now that power ratings are gone). All the other sports, the schools schedule themselves, except for state tournaments, which the WHSAA sets up. Schools can offer any sports they want, but the ability to play in state tournaments (and, to a certain extent, the right to be placed into conferences for regional tournaments) is what paying dues to the WHSAA gets a school.

Hope that helps.

Hey Patrick, I didn't think there would be any comments on this one, boy was I wrong! Anyway, looks like a good job of answering!

Posted by: Bison Fan on November 12, 2008 2:35AM EST
Patrick, great answers.

Just to add a couple of items. The Department of Ed only provides transportation funds to schools for WHSAA sanctioned events (which includes non-sport related activities as well). So, in a sense a school cannot independently offer any sport they want....not if they want to be able to afford it.

You absolutely pointed out the potential for the scheduling debacles we now have. However, I truly believed that with power ratings going away and the new reclass that we would see out of state games go away. I'm not sure how any of this works for teams that play out of state. How will a Torrington play two or three Nebraska teams and make it to the playoffs?

Maybe make it to the playoffs is a bit too fine of a line. But certainly, how will they fall in the rankings or seating mix against a team who has only played in-state 3A (Current 4A) teams?

Posted by: Mike Smith on November 12, 2008 9:01AM EST
First of all I am glad that Thermopolis doesn't play Worland (rival forever), due to the fact that the Head Coach, radio announcers, etc, are convinced they can't beat Worland. Great attitudes to pass onto kids.
However, have they not looked into the mileage to play Burns. That is a Burns team that will be pretty good.
The Kemmerer-Glenrock match is sort of like the NFL scheduling Super Bowl teams on the 1st Monday night game. Great Job.
Patrick hit it on the head, did you not see this coming.

Posted by: bigDaddy on November 12, 2008 10:00AM EST
wright panther - that really sounds like somebody who is used to being the big school and dominating everything, and now is the middle sized school and is feeling what Kemmerer and Glenrock have felt for years and still feel in every other sport other than football, the small guy in the big pond. If you want to look at the difference between Glenrock's something less than 200 kids, Kemmerer's 170 kids and Wright at 140 (wow 60 kids difference) but let's look at the difference between Glenrock's 200 and Jackson's 600-700 kids that they have to deal with in the other 7 sports they compete against each other in. I don't think you are going to get much sympathy.

Posted by: sports fan on November 12, 2008 10:23AM EST
Pat,
You could see the traditional rivalry games going to the watse side because the lack of non confrence games, but it does not make sense to do away with the power rankings if you are going to have part of the 2A schools playing 1A schools for their 1 non confrence game while the others are playing another 2A team for their non confrence. Yes some 1A schools are as good some years but there is a reason why WHSAA feels there is a need to divide these teams into different classifications. I think you are setting some teams up with a one game advantage before you even start the season. I think that 4A is the only classification that they got it right. No out of state games and they play with in their classification each week. I just don't know how you can have teams play a quarter of their season out of state and still go by straight record for picking the teams for the playoffs.

Posted by: sports fan on November 12, 2008 10:37AM EST
Does anybody know if some of the 1A 6 man teams even have a football filed. Some of these teams are new to football just wondering if they have a field in place, building a field, or going to use a neighboring towns field.

Posted by: rangerfan on November 12, 2008 10:48AM EST
Wright Panther Fan, wow. You call a Ranger team that will have 30 more kids than you being able to come in and "steal" a championship? If I was the rest of todays 3A I would be insulted. You think that Mt. View, Lyman, Lovell, Big Piney, Moorcroft, Pinedale and the rest go home and cry about how unfair it is that those big schools Kemmerer and Glenrock have an unfair advantage and they should be moved out. That the only reason these two programs win is because they have 10 more kids than thermopolis. Really when kemmerer is a middle sized current 3a team. Smaller than mt. View, lyman, pinedale, glenrock, thermopolis and the same size as lovell and 15 more than Big piney. Boy did you just ignite some fires for two good quality programs. I know which game glenrock has circled on their schedule and I bet I know who the Rangers are praying to get a shot at in the post season next year. GO RANGERS!!
ps. Hope all the panther fans know who you are and are a little disgusted with your rantings.

Posted by: Rangerfan on November 12, 2008 10:53AM EST
BTW, love the new schedule. Lots of traveling, new rivalries to build, plus every one counts as it is a conference game. Also interesting that we get to clash with the herd right off the bat. Man I love High School football. Bring on 2009!! GO RANGERS!! Will miss butting heads with the rebels from rich and those broncs from up north. Good luck to all, And lets win a title this weekend RANGERS!!

Posted by: Herder103 on November 12, 2008 11:25AM EST
Glenrock has had Wright cirlced on their schedule since the 2001 season. I believe Wright has only beaten the herd 1 time since that season.
RangerFan you are right about igniting a flame about classification that Kemmerer and Glenrock have been dealing w/ for the last 25 years.

I don't think the Glenrock people are too worried about not playing Classless Douglas anymore, and besides its a lose lose situation for Douglas. if they win they are supposed to and if they lose to a smaller classification it reflects bad on their program

Posted by: fishmaster on November 12, 2008 11:35AM EST
Bison Fan -
Look a little closer at your facts. Torrington only plays 1 NE team on next year's schedule - then play Riverton, Cody and Worland. (not quite 30 miles away like Gering - just to let the Thermop people know it is not just them travelling). Also, I do believe that Wheatland also plays a NE team and Douglas plays a NE team and a SD team. Just saying, check the facts.

Posted by: Barrell Man on November 12, 2008 11:39AM EST
The Douglas vs. Belle Fourche Game will be a good one. I read the Rapid City Paper a week or so ago and it looked like BF lost to St. Thomas More in the State Semifinals. I think STM has gone to State Championship in the Dakota Dome a couple years in a row.

I still can't believe that wyoming had to drop to six man football. I have talked to kids from montana and Meeteetse and they agree that all you need is one or two fast kids and you'll win. It just won't be the same.

The schedules are pretty intense. Some small 1a schools such as Cokeville, Burlington, Upton and Dubois are going to have tough schedules. Oh well...but really Glenrock and Kemmerer dropping to 2A? hmm...i don't know about that...but we'll see. I mean Cokeville kicks Big Piney's butt so lets see if some smaller school like wright can knock them off. Now let's wait for the '09 season and the state championships in Laramie...but as for now lets cheer on the teams in the championships this year...as for the panther fan...i agree

Posted by: Confused Coach? on November 12, 2008 12:14PM EST
Why is it so hard to schedule for 1A and 2A? For out of cenference games it makes sense to play 1A West vs 1A East and 2A West vs 2A East, or 1A West vs 2A West and 1A East vs 2A East. But instead the WHSAA decides to try and accomodate the schools. How do they decide what schools to accomodate? If they can't accomodate everybody then nobody should be accomodated and one of the previous stated scenarios should take place. Instead there's crossover of both scenarios and a few teams get the shaft. A little consistency would be nice.

Posted by: Herder103 on November 12, 2008 12:16PM EST
Glenrock and Kemmerer are playing the same teams they did this year, with the exception of Burns, Tongue River, Big Horn and Greybull. If they weren't in this class they would be playing Douglas, Buffalo, Wheatland, Torrington, Jackson, Cody, Worland, Ect..... Not real fair for schools with less than 200 kids to be playing schools w/ excess of 400 students

Posted by: 2a Fan on November 12, 2008 12:24PM EST
It's a joke that greybull and riverside don't play each other this year. these two teams have been rivals forever and have had played each other every year for as long as i can remember. They are 8 miles away from each other are you kidding that they wont play each other. its stupid. and why would kemmerer and glenrock go down you say that will be playing the same teams look at who is new in their division, that is half a schedule. so you should look at it and they are playing down another class. make them go up and have a challenge. I agree with wright panther fan, its stupid to move two teams down that are dominating. look at wyoming indian they were a 3a school that played a 1a schedule have kemmerer and glenrock play a now "3a" schedule.

Posted by: football fan on November 12, 2008 12:27PM EST
The people who are on this blog complaining about schools like Glenrock and Kemmerer "dropping" to the 2A next year need to pay a little more attention to what has taken place in the last couple of months before running off at the mouth....or the keyboard. WHSAA has added six-man football, starting next year. So, there are two divisions in the 1A: 11-man and 6-man. As a result, they have dropped the 5A classification. The largest classification will now be 4A. So the schools currently making up the 5A clas will be 4A next year, 4A will now be the 3A, 3A will now be the 2A. For at least the next two years, the 2A classification will largely be what is now the current 3A...there are a couple of exceptions, schools like Burns basically move up a class (check your ADM figures). Make sure you get your facts straight and understand what has taken place before you come on here and rant like a two-year-old.

Posted by: Herder103 on November 12, 2008 12:29PM EST
Somebodies got to be the low man on the totem pole. Glenrock has been the low man for 25 years, its somebody elses turn. Whose to say Glenrock and Kemmerer will be dominate in 2-3 years anyway. We all know high school athletics are cyclical, esepcially in the smaller classifications. You have good athletes for a few years and then you have don't have them for a few years, and then its somebody elses turn to rise to the top.

Posted by: 1a fan on November 12, 2008 12:32PM EST
The ADM figures are good but it is just like Guernsey going to 6 man when that can play 11 man just as easy as upton and dubois.

Posted by: 2a Fan on November 12, 2008 12:33PM EST
Football fan...its not staying the same as said in a previous comment there are 4 teams staying in 2a and those 4 teams that is half a schedule as i said which makes this years schedule basically a glorified "2a" sechdule from last year it is possibly obvious that you are from one of those schools and is happy that you have an easier schedule this year maybe they should just toughed up and play in a division that they should be in.

Several good points here. sports fan and confused coach, I think, are bringing up a good point on the nonconference games -- if you can't honor all (or at least most) of the requests for that game, a cross-bracket, be it East vs. West or 2A vs. 1A, would have worked best. It'd be interesting to see how that would have worked out if they had done it.

Also, I just want to make a couple other things clear. First, the nonconference games won't count for playoff seeding -- it's conference record, not overall record, that will be used to determine playoff seeding. And nobody is really dropping. Football fan hit it right on the head. Actually, the only school to drop was Riverton. Everyone else either stayed where they were or moved up.

1a fan - Glenrock, Kemmerer and Newcastle are dropping to 2a next year, but next years 2a really is just this years 3a with the return of Tongue River, Greybull and the addition of Burns, Big Horn and Wyoming Indian. I think with the exception of Big Horn these teams have all been in this class recently. The only real change is they have expanded the class to 16 schools instead of 11 and called it a different name.

Posted by: football fan on November 12, 2008 12:40PM EST
3A schools did not "drop" a classification. The WHSAA dropped the 5A classification. Starting next year, 5A will no longer exist.....it isn't that tough to understand what has taken place. Almost all schools in the state (current 3A-5A) drop a classification next year. A few stay the same, mostly current 1A schools. Not difficult to understand what is taking place IF you take the blinders off.

2a Fan-

FYI...I am not from a town who has enjoyed ANY kind of success in football for a few years, but that doesn't mean that to understand the reclassification for next year requires a degree from Harvard. With the new classification, my town will still continue to struggle. One thing to also remember....schools do not schedule their own football games, the WHSAA does the football scheduling. If you don't like the schedule that you got , and/or if you don't like the sysytem f using ADM to classify the schools, make a phone call to the WHSAA office in Casper instead of whining about it to people that really don't feel sorry for you.

I think everybody is missing the point..I totally argeee with the Panter fan.. If you can win this years 4a state title (next year 3A state title why wouldn't you want to.. Either one GlenRock or Kemmer can Win 4A state this year with out question.. I look at it the larger the class greater the glory.. What ever happend the old rivals.. What was ever wrong with the 2005,2006 classes... Wright Lusk, Wright Sundance, Wright Big Horn.. School population doesn't mean anything... Glenrock proved that this year since they beat both Douglas and Buffalo

Well said football fan!!

If you want the kids to be successful in their respective class, hit the weightroom and create a winning environment. You can only control so many things in life, and effort is one of them.

You can't control what individual town and school populations will be, or how many miles you have to travel. You have to play w/ the cards you are dealt and do the best you can.

After all we are talking about a game that is here to give our kids an escape from life, create an environment where they can flourish and achieve success, whether its as a person or as a team. For some kids driving from Tongue River to Glenrock is an experience they might have never have the opportunity to do again. Some kids have never left the county they are born in. They are learning how to socialize in a public format and be around people and other kids that care about them. A football team is a family and some kids in our world wouldn't have a family without their teammates. So lets keep this game in perspective. And lets enjoy this weekends games and good luck to all contestants, coaches, and fans

Wright has had a very successful program over the last five years but we have not been dominate like Glenrock and kemmer.. Even in Class 2A during the 2005,2006 season we were not.. so if you think im bitchin and causin problems then i guess we can solve it one way.... On the Field next Fall.. Win State..Go Panthers

Posted by: Kevin Williams on November 12, 2008 1:06PM EST
When discussing the loss of traditional rivalry games, one thing must be remembered...Wyoming has the shortest football season of any state with the exception of perhaps Alaska. If we had a length of season even close to what even our neighboring states have, it could accommodate a traditional rivalry like Greybull v. Riverside.

Posted by: Hillsdale on November 12, 2008 1:24PM EST
This is insane. Gillette plays three games against teams that are almost in Utah. Burns does not play Pine Bluffs, but plays a team from the Big Horn Basin, and Tongue River, which is between Sheridan and Montana. Pine Bluffs does not get to play the age-old rival, Burns, that is within the same school district, but does play a team from Sheridan, which is on the Montana border.

I cannot believe that this will not have an academic or participation impact on students who are on those respective borderlines.

The conference realignment priorities have been faulty from the outset. This just proves it.

Posted by: Rangerfan on November 12, 2008 1:51PM EST
So let me understand this... if a team has a few years of success (winning state titles) even though they are not near the biggest in the class, they should be bumped up. Heaven forbid the other teams in the class see that as a target point and work to get there. They have the same resources as kemmerer. Kemmerer next year will be smaller than Mt. View, lyman, Thermopolis, pinedale, and glenrock but because they have had success they need to move. Then here is my proposal then for next year 4A--Natrona, Gillette, Buffalo, Cheyenne East, Douglas, Glenrock, Kemmerer, Southeast, Burns, Cokeville. 3A--Green River, Rock Springs, Star Valley, Jackson, Laramie, Cheyenne Central, Big Piney, Mt. View, Riverside, Lovell, Wind River, cody
2A--Lander, riverton, Saratoga, Rocky Mountain, Pinedale,
I will not list all but my point is hopefully made. We could reclassify every 3 years (becasue it takes at least that long to build a program) and base it off of win/loss records and titles won.

Posted by: tmillerwyo on November 12, 2008 1:53PM EST
The WHSAA doesn't place HSs into classifications according past championships, but according to size. Also, conferences should be determined by the HS, not the WHSAA. Let the individual ADs of the HSs schedule FB games like ever other sport that HS plays.

Posted by: bigDaddy on November 12, 2008 1:54PM EST
Welcome to the D – I respectfully disagree with you. There is a hole in your theory, this isn't like the pros where you can be on top year after year. Glenrock's success this year is because of the commitment and dedication of this years seniors (they have been playing organized football together since the 5th grade), I think they will graduate 12 - 15 this spring. I think there are 2 juniors that start and another 3 that play varsity consistently (I'm sure Kemmerer has a similar situation). Just because Glenrock has dominated the east the last two years, won't necessarily carry over to next year. So with your theory Glenrock should go up a class and go maybe 2-6 and get crushed in the playoffs, then Wheatland could drop down (since they were the bottom of 4a this year) and they would have a shot at being state champs because they were 4 times bigger than everybody else (not always, but school population does usually mean something, that’s why we have classes to begin with). Every year there is going to be a school or two, who can compete at a higher class and one or two who don’t have a chance in theirs, but it is cyclical and it’s nearly impossible to be on top year after year.

Of course this is my opinion - I could be wrong

Posted by: football fan on November 12, 2008 1:57PM EST
With the new conferences alignments (as a result of reclassification), I think there are a few schools that are going to experience significant travel for the first time in many years. There are a lot of schools in this state that have had to deal with large amounts of travel (just for conference games) and they come to expect it...even if they don't necessarily like it. Having spent time in southeast Wyoming for a number of years, I know that conference travel has not been as great for some of those smaller schools in that part of the state...and that is about to change. Welcome to the travel club. In a state as sparsely populated as we are, and with such distances between schools, most of us have had to deal with long travel distances for a number of years. There really is no way to get around it if there are going to be large (6+ teams) conferences. You could make smaller conferences (4 teams each) that are set up more geographically, but will that help with the non-conference portion of the schedule and the travel that would be required for those games? Each day, I realize a little more that this is a tough state in which to do high school sports scheduling.

Posted by: Roy on November 12, 2008 2:00PM EST
If I'm not mistaken, a school's nonconference schedule will have no bearing on postseason decisions. Because there are no power points, playoff seeding will be dependent on conference records only. (Correct?) So it doesn't matter if you play a 1A or 2A school, or an out of state school on your nonconference schedule. Also if you look at the schedules, quite a few of the out of state games are gone. Torrington has only Chadron as an out of state opponent next year.

Kemmerer and Glenrock dropped, just like every other team that was in 5A, 4A, & 3A. Am I missing something obvious here? There is no more 5A so everyone dropped, right? Quit making excuses for why your team can't win.

I really like what the new 4a did this year and went to a nine game round robin.

I sure wish that the new 3a would do the same. I love the fact that we next year go to Douglas(especially since they graduate this stud class finally!) and then host Rawlins.

Would be great to do a 2yr of those contests home/away and then take on 2 other 3a east opponents the next 2 years.

I do love the Teton game staying on there for Jackson, but would gladly give it up for a Riverton/Wheatland/Torrington/Buffalo game instead.

Let's develop some good e vs w rivalries and do away with the nebraska, idaho, south dakota, montana games unless they are 0 week games.

I guess though, since the good old PRs are gone, the games not in the 3a east and west don't really matter, but I want to play these other 3a schools more than once in a blue moon!

Posted by: Patrick Schmiedt on November 12, 2008 4:26PM EST
Just to throw this out, too....

Zero Week is wide open for 3A, 2A and 1A. If Greybull and Riverside, or Burns and Pine Bluffs, or... whoever, want to continue their rivalry, they can schedule a game for that Zero Week. FWIW.

1A fan, you need to get some facts before you start typing. They suited 20 in the playoffs this year and lose 7 and gain 4. The math equals 17. Also, it is a 2 year scheduling cycle and in the 2010 season Guernsey will lose 7 more while gaining 3. That math equals 13. That means starting freshmen and sophomores that do not weigh 110 lbs and hoping nobody gets injured or becomes ineligible. 13 does not work. Ask Midwest.

Posted by: Anonymous on November 12, 2008 10:37PM EST
Don't quote me on this, but I am pretty sure Guernsey didn't have enough kids to field an 11-man junior high team this year. Though the town is about 1000 people, it's sort of a retirement town, and the high school is shrinking. They are the smallest 2A school for basketball and track right now by at least 15 kids, making them smaller than some schools that are still 1A. This is just a setback of the 2-year cycle stuff, and that happens, but because of how the high school is shrinking, 6-man ball is about all that looks feasible right now.

Posted by: 1a fan on November 13, 2008 1:41AM EST
Guernsey is a military town. Dubois played their last game of the season with 11 kids. Cokeville doesn't get very many kids out either and still manages to dominate. Guernsey should drop when it gets to the point where they can't play 11 man. Dubois only had about 16 kids out for middle school football and did very well. Who cares if kids have to play both ways...that's how 1a football is done. Upton had 15 kids on their team this season. This is why we should've dropped to nine man football instead of 6 man. And in 1A there are a lot of teams that have kids that only weigh 110 pounds. That size isn't a good reason. So here is some math...20-7=13 then +4= 17...i think it only only takes 6 to field a six man team...so much for playing time for the other 11 kids.

Posted by: 1a fan on November 13, 2008 1:44AM EST
And have you been to Dubois? A huge retirement town. with very few kids. I'm saying man up and play, don't take the easy way out.

This is my opinion...if you've played 1a football in the past 2-3 years you would know what im talking about.

Posted by: Anonymous on November 13, 2008 9:31AM EST
Southeast had over 40 kids out for football this year, pretty good for a 1-a school!? How about counting the gender instead of overall enrollment?

Posted by: Barrell Man on November 13, 2008 10:28AM EST
Did it occur to anybody that going 6-man might allow the WHSAA to add more schools to the conference, that way you don't have to play teams 2x in the regular season.

This is a great thing for places like Rock River, Baggs, Metetsee(sp?), Farson, ect...

When was the last time any of these schools fielded a football team?(except meteetsee(sp?) of course)

Posted by: sport fan on November 13, 2008 11:09AM EST
Wow, who would have though that this would have ballooned into such an debate. For those of you debating Kemmerer, Glenrock, yes either school is capable of winning the 4A state championship this year, with really talented groups of seniors. The thing that, I know and have witnessed is that things change in Wyoming schools depending on the athletes and dedication that each school has. Look at Big Piney and Mountain View this year that have long standing traditions, and this year they are down. Are they expected to stay their I don't think so. Basically what goes around comes around, Wright Panthers you will get your chance when everything lines up good athletes and great coaching, or great athletes and good coaching. Until then all you can do is hope for the best, and push your kids to put in the most effort that can and hope for the best.

The Oil Bowl will be played in September. It seems like the tradition of having the game played toward the end of the season is just about dead. How sad.

Posted by: tmillerwyo on November 13, 2008 12:33PM EST
It's not the WHSAA's fault rivalries are being lost, its your local ADs that voted to have the WHSAA make their FB schedules. Why can ADs make schedules for every other sport besides FB?

Posted by: sports fan on November 13, 2008 3:34PM EST
I think that Wright and Upton should renew their "Coal Bowl" during zero week, this is a week in which WHSAA can not take away rivalry games. Does anyone knoe if some of the 1A teams have footnball fields. There is a bunch of new programs and was just wondering if they had a field, building a field, or just going to use a neighboring towns field??

Former 4A

I agree I think the new schedule is exciting. In regard to looking forward to playing Douglas, be careful what you wish for. This group of seniors from Douglas is very talented and will be greatly missed. I can't help but believe this is just the beginning for Douglas football their JV went undefeated with really only one close game (at Buffalo). Because of the Douglas' domination in many games their Juniors and Sophomores have gained a great deal of experience, and these kids are not afraid of doing what it takes to be the best. Coach Rhoades has done an amazing job of turning this program into a perennial contender. Just like wrestling, basketball, etc... I think you can count on Douglas being in the mix year in and year out.

Posted by: former 4a on November 14, 2008 10:26AM EST
turpin- 100% do not WANT to or LOOK FORWARD to playing Douglas next season because I think JH can win, I am just excited to see the 5a up game and 3a down game go away. I wish I could see JH play ALL 4a(now 3a) opponents, just for the pure fun of same class football. I did love the kemmerer and rock springs games, but I really just want to mix it up with same class schools and see new energetic rivalries develop.

I don't know rhodes, but have heard nothing but good things about him from folks over here, and he has done great things so far!

Posted by: Sewac on November 16, 2008 1:49AM EST
We played Guernsey this year and they had 7 JH FB players. I am not sure how they will be able to play 11 man ball in 2 years. They may be a military town but it seems like they don't have kids right now. Playing with 13 kids hurts the kids. You are telling kids that they have to play both ways as freshmen, instead of playing JV ball against kids their size and age. It does not seem like a way to promote football, but discourage it.
