You bet she can
Posted by: Sally Ann (NEVER Sally) Shurmur at 10:49AM EST on February 22, 2008

The office chatter this morning is all about Jessica Brenton and Seth Harris's decision not to wrestle her in this morning's opening round at the state tournament.

Seth is getting all kinds of support from his coach. So Jessica wins 6 points for the Mustangs without stepping on the mat and advances.

The best Seth can hope for is 3rd.

An elegant woman in the office says she admires him for a "gentleman knowing how to treat a lady."

Jessica is a wrestler and she's a girl. She's from a wrestling family.

Rulemakers have said girls can wrestle. She's not busting any rules, just a lot of hearts when she outmaneuvers them on the mat.

One guy says he's watched her several times this season and the outcome's always the same.

"If they're not gonna wrestle her, she'll kick their a--," he said.

She must certainly hate this front-page attention when all she wants to do is wrestle.

You go, girl!

Wow times three
Posted by: Sally Ann (NEVER Sally) Shurmur at 12:07PM EST on February 18, 2008

So Valentine's Day 2008 was a HUGE thrill for me.  Several weeks ago, I told the friend the only thing I wanted for Valentine's Day was flowers delivered to the office.

Always generous in lots of other ways, the friend thinks that flowers delivered to the office are unnecessary and at Valentine's Day time, enormously expensive.

So he called about 6 times on Thursday afternoon and finally about 3:30, said something about complaining to a flower shop.

At 5 minutes to 5, the most gorgeous bouquet of peach and white roses arrived. THEY ARE FABULOUS!

We enjoyed dinner Thursday night at the Paisley Shawl in  Glenrock, our favorite special-occasion restaurant. The roads were horrible after Wednesday night's snow and the friend came to get me and brought me home.

I had Chicken Oscar and the friend had Shrimp Scampi Ravioli and both were superb.

On Saturday, we enjoyed dinner at the FireRock, which Gary Bryan from the Outback, the Casper Country Club and the Jazz Spot is now managing.

We each enjoyed ribeyes and they were terrific.

I am really a Spoiled Rotten Brat, and this is a Valentine's Day I won't soon forget.

Totally makes up for those four years of dozens of bouquets on the Pi Phi piano -- none of which were ever for me.

Happy birthday, Skinny Son
Posted by: Sally Ann (NEVER Sally) Shurmur at 1:09PM EST on February 7, 2008

So Skinny Son is 24 today. Where the heck have the years gone?

His birthday will be spent working and then going out for dinner and to "Gypsy" at the Events Center with Big Mama, the friend and his friend.

From the time he was about 10 and had to spend many evenings in Las Vegas hotel rooms with other kids while their parents did the town, I told him I'd take him to Vegas for his 21st birthday.

That didn't happen. Now the best I can do is dinner and a Broadway-style show.

My 24th birthday was a momentous one because I had a date with Mr. Wonderful. I remember what I wore, I remember where we went, it was magical.

There's no way I can provide that kind of experience for my oldest kid, but I wish I could.

When parenting experts say that each kid is different and you love them all, they are absolutely right.

This kid, my only son, is a great person with wonderful personality traits. He is easy to please and appreciative.

I raised my kids to be independent and he is. He's been "on his own" for a long time at an age when a lot of kids are just leaving the nest.

Maybe someday, we'll take that trip to Vegas. For now, all I can say is Happy Birthday.
